How to Make Your Own BBQ Sauce

This homemade BBQ sauce is easy, bold, and built from simple pantry ingredients. It balances sweetness from brown sugar with tangy vinegar and a smoky finish from paprika—great on grilled chicken, pulled pork, burgers, or as a dip for fries and onion rings.
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups ketchup
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 1/2 tablespoons ground mustard
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
Instructions
Combine the base: In a medium saucepan, whisk together the ketchup, white vinegar, and water until smooth.
Add seasonings: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, ground mustard, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and brown sugar. Mix until fully combined.
Simmer: Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
Thicken: Reduce heat to low and cook 15–20 minutes, stirring now and then so it doesn’t stick. The sauce will deepen in color and thicken slightly.
Cool: Remove from heat and let cool.
Store: Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate.
