A tangy-sweet, smoky homemade BBQ sauce made in one pot with pantry staples—perfect for grilling, dipping, and weeknight dinners.
Yields about 3 cups (about 24 servings at 2 Tbsp each)
Prep Time:
5 minutes
Level:
• Sweeter sauce: add 2–4 extra tablespoons brown sugar. • Tangier sauce: add 1–2 extra tablespoons vinegar. • Spicy kick: add a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes. • Extra depth: add 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder.

This homemade BBQ sauce is easy, bold, and built from simple pantry ingredients. It balances sweetness from brown sugar with tangy vinegar and a smoky finish from paprika—great on grilled chicken, pulled pork, burgers, or as a dip for fries and onion rings.

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups ketchup

1/2 cup white vinegar

1/2 cup water

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

2 1/2 tablespoons ground mustard

2 teaspoons smoked paprika

2 teaspoons salt

1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper

1 1/2 cups brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Combine the base: In a medium saucepan, whisk together the ketchup, white vinegar, and water until smooth.

  2. Add seasonings: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, ground mustard, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and brown sugar. Mix until fully combined.

  3. Simmer: Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

  4. Thicken: Reduce heat to low and cook 15–20 minutes, stirring now and then so it doesn’t stick. The sauce will deepen in color and thicken slightly.

  5. Cool: Remove from heat and let cool.

  6. Store: Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate.
